Remote Control Solutions

Remote Control Systems can be as basic as Range Extension for your Stereo remote, or as advanced as a single handheld device that will control your TV, Stereo, lights, blinds, hot tub, doors, front gate or whatever else you can think of.

Here we will cover actual 'Remote Controls' and the sub-systems used to control standard home electronic equipment that can already be operated using a remote, like TV's, Stereos, Satellite and Cable boxes, etc.
We will ignore products that are specifically related to controlling infrastructure and fixtures integrated into your home, such as lighting, heating, blinds, doors, etc., these products are in our Home Automation section found through the menu at the top of the page or by clicking HERE.
PLEASE NOTE that any programmable remote can be used in conjunction with home automation systems and components.

Remote Control Systems fall into 2 basic categories; Range Extenders and Programmable Remote Controls:

Range Extenders

Range Extending systems are pretty self-explanatory, they allow your existing or other Infrared (Ir) remotes to work without having line-of-sight to the equipment. This is accomplished by using one or many wired receivers and at least one wired transmitter; the receivers are strategically positioned to provide line-of-sight to areas where you want your remotes to work, and the transmitter is placed with line-of-sight to the equipment you want to control. These are simply repeater systems; the receivers pick-up your remote's signal and the transmitter 'repeats' or re-transmits it so the equipment can pick it up.

Range Extenders are highly cost effective and can be used in conjunction with Programmable Remotes as described below;

Programmable Remotes

Programmable Remotes are hand-held or table-top devices that are capable of controlling anything in or around your home, provided you have the proper supporting systems. All modern AV components can already be controlled by some sort of remote control device and do not require and special add-on components to be useable with a Programmable Remote unless Range Extension is required, so as mentioned above, we will stay away from the Home Automation aspects of Programmable Remotes in the following sections.
