Structured Cabling

What is Structured Cabling and What Advantages Does It Offer

In one sentence Structured Cabling is the practice of combining ALL of the "low-voltage" (Class 2) wiring in a house and treating it as one wiring system. This can include wiring for a home network, telephone, video, audio, alarms, infrared remote control, home automation, or anything else you choose to throw in.

In a Structured Cabling System, ALL low-voltage cables or wires from all outlets, no matter what their purpose or location, are run to one central point.

Advantages of Structured Cabling:

Configurability

Because all of the cables are run back to a Common Point and clearly labeled, you the homeowner can easily change how and to what the individual cables are connected, and what they are used for.

Versatility & Aesthetics

High quality modular outlet systems allow for any combination of up to 6 independent Data, Telephone, Video or Monaural audio jacks to be installed in the same outlet, providing greater flexibility and a cleaner finished appearance. To see an example click HERE

Resource Sharing
In addition to providing the ability to share a single Internet connection, the proper Data Cabling allows files and even devices such as scanners and printers to be shared between all the computers in the home.

No Splices
Splices are prone to failure, noise and interference, and are eliminated by a Structured Wiring system.

Consistent Signal Quality
With all cables running back to a Common Point they can all be connected to the same sources and access the same signal levels.

A Structured Cabling system can incorporate any combination of Low-Voltage wiring types. For video, a high quality RG6 Quad Shielded cable should be used instead of the older RG59. The use of RG6 Quad Shield reduces signal loss especially at the higher frequencies used for DSS (satellite) and it is far less susceptible to interference.

For the data network we recommend a high quality Cat5e, Cat6 or even optical fiber.
For the phone, Cat5e cable and RJ-45 jacks should be used in place of the older 4-conductor phone cable and RJ-11 jacks. In addition to reducing noise and interference, this provides a capacity of up to 4 phone lines in the same jack.

As a homeowner you may not need all the advanced capabilities this type of cabling system provides today, but with home entertainment, networking and multi-media distribution evolving so quickly the benefits of a proper Structured Wiring Package will become evident in a very short time.
